Boyup Brook Mural

I hadn't meant to have such a long absence from blogging, I realise it's now been a month. I must try and catch up with what's been happening in blogland.  Anyway, I came across this quaint mural painted  on the outside wall of a real estate agents office  in the South West town of Boyup Brook.  The open gate caught my attention. I love how it is open and leads up the path to the house. It also helps hide the air conditioner  unit which has been painted green to blend in also.

Just a Little Train

Why is it when there is a deadline to meet, you get caught at a railway crossing?. This happened to us last week on the way to Toodyay to meet up with friends.  We always allow plenty of time but didn't count on getting caught as the trains are few and far between these days. We got caught by the same train twice  at two  railway crossings, there is actually  the opportunity to get stuck at three crossings, two on the way into Goomalling and one on the way out. I guess we are lucky we missed the third. This train was carrying grain and had 50 carriages attached to it. That's what you do, count carriages while you are waiting, tapping your fingers on the dash.

The end. No I wasn't going to bore you with all the photos of the carriages.

Monday Murals

These murals are in Wyalkatchem. All show the history of the town, in the wheatbelt,  which at one time boasted a much bigger  population than todays 350 people.

"Pioneering Women of Lake Grace"

This quite large mural is on the wall outside of the local shopping centre at Lake Grace. It is dedicated to past and present women who have contributed to their local community. Lake Grace is a wheat and sheep farming area surrounded by the  large salt lake from which it takes it's name. My previous post shows some beautiful pink flowering gum trees in the main street of town.

The mural was painted by Irene Osborne  and all the names of the women are listed.
A book titled "Far Site - Women of the Salt Lake Country" tells their stories

Goomalling

This mural is at the Goomalling Historical Museum, which wasn't open yesterday when we thought we would finally stop and have a look. The town was deserted so I don't blame anyone for not wanting to hang around all day on the off chance a traveller would stop by. This building was once an old school room and I like how the class room is as if you are looking through the window. The children would have walked, ridden their horses or caught the school bus  in days gone by.

A Mural of Convenience

The final mural for 2013 was taken on our August trip to New Zealands North Island town of Dargaville. The public amenities on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River are painted to match their surroundings. Featured  is the Pohutukawa Tree or is commonly known as the New Zealand Christmas Tree, the Band Rotunda and the River.

The Pohutukawa in the background of this pic are not in flower but when they do they are a vibrant red.

The yellow in the mural represents the Northern Wairoa River which is extremely muddy

Monday Mural

This mural is another one from our recent holiday to Dargaville in New Zealand.  It is a tiled mosaic mural set in the Gardens by the Northern Wairoa River. It has a Maori theme about it and a splash of yellow too.

Monday Mural

This is an old pic that I found amongst my photo collection. At the time this was taken I had never heard of Monday Murals so I could have had a whole series of them if only I had known and not just these two with hubby posing in front of them. These ones are from Dargaville in New Zealand, representing the early township and gum diggers.  The extremely valuable Kauri gum is found in the northland region of NZ.  You can read more about kauri gum Here

Blue Monday Mural

This brightly blue coloured mural is on a wall of a local business in Pingelly, Western Australia. A local trash and treasure market was being held at a park at the back of it. We left with some yummy homemade jam  and a cake for morning tea. Pingelly is a farming community in the south of WA.

New Norcia

Driving along Great Northern Highway, 132 klms north of Perth, and unaware of New Norcia, you would be amazed at what you come across.  Smack bang in the middle of nowhere is New Norcia , Australia's only Monastic Town. It was settled by the Spanish Benedictine Monks back in the 1860s. There is some amazing architecture here from the Hotel to the old boarding schools to the Monastry buildings themselves, all built by the monks. It is used as an education centre as well as a popular tourist town now, but still retains it's old world feel and is a wonderful place for a weekend retreat.
